About Biotechnology Department

MITS School of Biotechnology (MSB) established the department of Biotechnology in 2003 with an initial intake of 64 MSc-Biotechnology (postgraduate) students and got permanent recognition in 2010-11. An Under Graduate program (B. Sc.) in Biotechnology was introduced in 2004-05 with an initial intake of 64 seats, enhanced by 120 seats in 2015-16, further enhanced by 60 seats in 2019-20 and the total intake of B.Sc program reaches 180 seats. B.Sc program has permanent recognitions in 2010-11 and 2019-20. A Post Graduate program (M.Sc) in Applied Microbiology was introduced in 2013-14 with an initial intake of 32 seats, further enhance by 32 seats in 2019-20 and the total intake of M.Sc in Applied Microbiology reaches 64 seats. M.Sc in Applied Microbiology program has achieved permanent recognition in 2019-20. All the programs have recognition from Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Odisha and regulated as per the syllabus and regulations designed by the affiliating Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The department of Biotechnology feels proud to announce that this Institution has received the prequalification accreditation SSR before NAAC in May, 2024 (cycle-1). The department of Biotechnology is leaping forward with strength by strength over the years.

The department is headed by Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Mishra and it has 22 teaching faculty. 10 of our faculty members are with doctoral degree, and 2 are pursuing. Cadre-wise breakup of the faculty position is as under:

Research Vision – Department of Biotechnology

At the Department of Biotechnology, our research vision is to advance the frontiers of science through innovative, interdisciplinary research that addresses some of the most pressing challenges in health, agriculture, environment, and industry. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

PEOs for M.Sc. Biotechnology

PEO-1: To Understand and inculcate the ability to apply, update, extend and to develop deep knowledge through flexible, research intensive program designed to meet the current demand of academia and industry.

PEO-2: Demonstrate professional integrity and ethical attitude with awareness of global and national competencies and think about the social entailment of their work, especially its impact on safety, health and environment for sustainable development.

PEO-3: Participate in individual and team oriented, open ended activities promoting productive thinking to provide opportunities for students to manage and work on multidisciplinary projects through interaction with their peers in industry.
